Accessibility statement for External Forms

This accessibility statement applies to the following forms belonging to The Insolvency Service:

This website is run by The Insolvency Service. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

We also try to make the website text as simple as possible to understand.

There are many options for you to customise your web browser and device that could help you to navigate this and other websites more easily. If you have a disability, AbilityNet has helpful advice on how to make your device easier to use.

How accessible this website is

Parts of this website are known to have barriers. For example:

  • The text and form fields will not wrap on smaller screens. This results in needing to scroll in two directions to be able to use the website which can disorient users or cause them to miss important information.
  • Not all form fields have labels assigned to them. This makes the intention of some fields harder to understand visually and makes them unidentifiable for screen reader users.
  • Error messages are appended to the bottom of the page. This might cause users to miss important information because the order in which it's represented isn't meaningful.
  • The language of the pages isn't properly identified to assistive technologies. This can cause the screen reader to read the page in the wrong voice.

The Insolvency Service is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the Web Content Accessibility guidelines 2.1 A and AA levels

  • Tables are used to markup the layout of the page, but aren't marked up as such. This causes assistive technologies to interpret them as functional tables and switch mode of operations to accommodate. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relations).
  • Text is visually used to identify headings on pages, but it doesn't have the correct markup associated to it. This means assistive technologies do not identify it as headings. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relations).
  • There are fields which have a visible but not programmatically associated label present. This causes assistive technologies to not have a label associated with these inputs. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relations).
  • Errors after submission get appended to the bottom of the page. This may cause users to potentially miss them. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.2 (Meaningful sequence).
  • The language of the page isn't identified using the HTML lang attribute. This might cause screen readers, especially those that aren't setup with English by default, to read the page using an incorrect voice, making it difficult to understand. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.1.1 (Language of page).
  • Some parts of the code contained invalid HTML, not meeting the W3C HTML specification. We found structural errors that might influence the way assistive technologies interpret the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (Parsing).

What we're doing to improve accessibility

The issues are currently being worked on, and a new version of the site is expected in 2022.
