In that: VAT • The return for the first quarter ended 12/17 was not received by the due date of 7 February 2018 as a result of which HMRC issued an assessment giving a balance outstanding of £4,198.00. • The returns for the quarters 03/18 and 06/18 were not received by the due dates as a result of which HMRC issued assessments totalling £5,329.00. • The return for the quarter 12/17 was received without payment on 2 October 2018 and showed VAT payable of £13,801.35. • The return for the quarter 03/18 was received without payment on 24 October 2018 and showed VAT payable of £3,341.16. • The return for the quarter 06/18 was received without payment on 9 November 2018 and showed VAT payable of £4,041.27. • Returns for the quarters 09/18 to 12/18 were not submitted by the due date as a result of which assessments and surcharges totalling £8,342.00 and £1,044.65 respectively were raised by HMRC. • The returns were received without payment on 12 March 2019 and showed VAT payable of £10,216.72. The original surcharges were cancelled and the replacement surcharges totalled £1,201.14. • No further returns were submitted by the company as a result of which assessments and surcharges totalling £9,945.00 and £1,491.75 respectively were raised by HMRC for the quarters 03/19 to 09/19. • The liability therefore increased by £37,147.50, excluding surcharges of £2,692.89, in the period 8 February 2018 to September 2019. Comparative Treatment • During the period 8 February 2018 to 7 October 2019 the company turnover through the bank was £270,262.72 and nothing was paid to HMRC in respect of VAT. • At the date of liquidation the company owed a further £18,315.76 to HMRC in respect of PAYE and £5,354.75 for interest, surcharges, penalties and costs.
