Repeals

The Act coordinates and modernises financial regulatory arrangements previously established and operated under the following enactments, although not all of the Acts have been fully repealed.

The following repeals are contained in the Act, Schedule 22:

  • The Industrial Assurance Act 1923;

  • The Industrial Assurance and Friendly Societies Act 1948;

  • The Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965;

  • The Friendly Societies Act 1974;

  • The House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975;

  • The Northern Ireland Assembly Disqualification Act 1975;

  • The Insurance Brokers (Registration) Act 1977;

  • The Credit Unions Act 1979;

  • The Building Societies Acts 1986 and 1997;

  • The Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988;

  • The Finance Act 1991;

  • The Friendly Societies Act 1992; and

  • The Judicial Pensions and Retirement Act 1993.

The Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Consequential Amendments and Repeals) Order 2002 (SI 2001 No 3649) sets out the following important repeals in addition to those contained in the Act:

  • The Policyholders Protection Acts 1975 and 1997;

  • The Insurance Companies Act 1982;

  • The Financial Services Act 1986;

  • The Banking Act 1987 and

  • The Insurance Companies (Reserves) Act 1995.
